Born and raised in Mineola, New York, Daughtery moved with his family in 1974 to Columbus, Ohio, where he later graduated from St. Francis DeSales High School in 1985. He graduated from Xavier University with a bachelor’s degree in marketing in 1989 and completed his master’s in criminal justice from the same institute in 1996.<ref name=":0" />

Daughtery married his wife, Carol L. Zang, in September 1996, and the couple has three children: Brittany Nicole Daugherty, Evan Michael Daugherty, and Kyle Joseph Daugherty. As of 2025, he and his wife reside in Cincinnati, Ohio, and are expecting their first grandchild on 9 February.<ref name=":0" />
