Awasthi was born in the village of Sadarpur in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh. His father, Late Shri SriRam Awasthi, served as the village Pradhan. He completed his LL.B. from the University of Lucknow and began his career as a practicing lawyer.

Shyam Kishor Awasthi started his political journey with the student organization [[Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad]] (ABVP) between 1994 and 2006. He later became involved with the [[Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh]] (RSS) before formally joining the BJP.

During his time with the BJP:
