Shyam Kishor Awasthi (born 1 January 1979) is an Indian politician, advocate, and social worker from Uttar Pradesh. He is currently the Coordinator for the Lucknow Division in the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Awasthi previously contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from the Dhaurahra constituency and was formerly associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Early life and education

Awasthi was born in the village of Sadarpur in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh. His father, Late Shri SriRam Awasthi, served as the village Pradhan. He completed his LL.B. from the University of Lucknow and began his career as a practicing lawyer.

Political career

Early involvement

Shyam Kishor Awasthi started his political journey with the student organization Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) between 1994 and 2006. He later became involved with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) before formally joining the BJP.

Bharatiya Janata Party

During his time with the BJP:

  • Played a key role in the 2014 Lok Sabha campaign for the Dhaurahra constituency.
  • Helped secure BJP’s win at block level in Pasgawan (2015).
  • In 2017, supported the official BJP candidate after seeking a ticket from Mohammadi.
  • Appointed Coordinator for BJP’s “Prachar Prasar evam Nirman Vibhag” (Awadh region) in 2018.
  • Represented BJP in MP and Gujarat elections.
  • Held positions including Executive Member (Awadh Region) and Mandal In-charge for Lakhimpur Sadar in 2019.

Bahujan Samaj Party

In 2024, citing neglect and internal disagreements, Awasthi left BJP and joined BSP. He contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Dhaurahra as a BSP candidate, securing approximately 187,000 votes — the highest among BSP candidates in the Lucknow Division.

He was later appointed as the Coordinator of Lucknow Mandal by BSP President Mayawati.

Personal life

He is married to Mohini Awasthi and has three children. Apart from politics, Awasthi is also involved in agriculture and legal consultancy.
