CZ

Changpeng Zhao (commonly known as CZ) is a Chinese-born Canadian entrepreneur, software engineer, and investor best known as the founder and former CEO of Binance, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges by trading volume.^[1]

Early life

Changpeng Zhao was born in 1977 in Lianyungang, Jiangsu, China. His family later emigrated to Canada, where he spent much of his youth in Vancouver, British Columbia. During his teenage years, Zhao worked various service jobs, including at McDonald's and gas stations, to help support his family.^[2]

He studied computer science at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.^[3]

Career

Early career

Before entering the cryptocurrency industry, Zhao worked at the Tokyo Stock Exchange developing trading systems and later joined Bloomberg Tradebook, where he worked on high-frequency trading software.^[4]

He later became Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of OKCoin and was also involved with Blockchain.com during the early years of the cryptocurrency sector.^[5]

Binance

In July 2017, Changpeng Zhao founded Binance, a global cryptocurrency exchange platform. Binance rapidly became the world’s largest crypto exchange by trading volume within less than a year of launch.^[6]

Under Zhao’s leadership, Binance introduced multiple blockchain-related products and services, including:

Zhao became one of the most influential figures in the cryptocurrency industry and was frequently listed among the wealthiest individuals in crypto by Forbes and Bloomberg.^[7]

Regulatory issues

In November 2023, Zhao stepped down as CEO of Binance after pleading guilty to violations related to U.S. anti-money laundering regulations as part of a settlement between Binance and U.S. authorities.^[8]

In 2024, he served a four-month prison sentence related to the case.^[9]

Recognition

Changpeng Zhao is widely recognized as one of the most influential entrepreneurs in the cryptocurrency and blockchain industry. He played a major role in popularizing centralized cryptocurrency exchanges and expanding global adoption of digital assets.^[10]
