Black Bro Phi Fraternity

Black Bro Phi Fraternity

Black Bro Phi Fraternity is a private, independent Black brotherhood founded by Paul Salinas in 2015 and formally established in 2022. It operates outside the traditional National Pan-Hellenic Council and Greek letter councils but aligns with the values of unity, service, self-pride, respect, and self-empowerment. The name "Black Bro Phi" reflects masculinity, Blackness, and a deep family bond among brothers.

Mission

Black Bro Phi aims to:

  • Build a private, respectful brotherhood
  • Support mental health and personal growth
  • Celebrate Black identity, masculinity, and culture
  • Host dance and social events to foster community connection

Culture and Values

Black Bro Phi looks to foster a community of strong, grown brothers who support and uplift each other. The fraternity does not tolerate bad attitudes or negativity and encourages members to hold themselves and each other accountable.

Members are encouraged to express affection and unity openly — including hugs and brotherly bonding — creating a family atmosphere based on trust, respect, and authenticity.

History

Black Bro Phi began in 2015 as an informal brotherhood started by Paul Salinas to create a space for Black men seeking authentic connection and support. It expanded over several years and was formally established as a fraternity in 2022 with a structured membership system and brand identity.

Membership

Membership is open to Black men who align with the fraternity’s values. Members enter through tiers starting as "New Bro (Pledge)" and can progress to "Full Member" or "Big Bro." The fraternity focuses on authentic brotherhood through mutual support, fun, and personal growth.

Events

Key events include:

  • Bro House Retreats — Brotherhood bonding weekends and retreats
  • Divine Dance — Dance and cultural performance events
  • Oakland Takeovers — Group trips and safe-space community gatherings

About the Founder

Paul Salinas is the founder and executive director of Black Bro Phi Fraternity and Beta Beta Phi Fraternity. He is recognized as the first deaf owner of these fraternities, bringing a unique perspective and leadership style to the organizations.

While Paul is deaf, the majority of members and attendees in both Beta Beta Phi and Black Bro Phi fraternities are hearing. Under his guidance, the fraternities emphasize inclusivity, respect, and strong brotherhood bonds regardless of hearing ability.

Paul’s vision centers on building private brotherhoods that uplift Black men through family, culture, and empowerment without labels or judgment.
