Fintua
Fintua is a fintech company based in Kilkenny, Ireland, that provides software solutions for indirect tax compliance and recovery. Formerly known as Taxback International, the company rebranded in 2025 to align with its focus on SaaS-based offerings, including VAT compliance, e-invoicing, and cross-border payment technologies. History
Fintua was established in 1996 as Taxback International by Irish entrepreneur Terry Clune. Initially focused on assisting students with foreign VAT refunds, the company expanded into corporate VAT recovery services in the early 2000s. It became part of the Taxback Group, which was later reorganized and rebranded as CluneTech, a fintech group that also includes companies such as TransferMate, Immedis, and Sprintax..[2]
From 2020 onwards, Taxback International shifted focus towards enterprise SaaS platforms for indirect tax compliance. This transformation culminated in its rebranding to Fintua in March 2025, a name derived from "Fin" (finance) and “-tua” from the Irish word tuath (community). The rebranding was formally launched in June–July 2025 across its global offices, including the Kilkenny headquarters.[3]
Products and Services
Fintua provides a range of platform-based solutions designed to manage indirect tax processes for global businesses. Its Comply platform offers real-time VAT compliance capabilities, including automated filing, cross-border VAT management, ERP integration, and AI-driven risk analysis. Recover is a VAT recovery engine that helps identify reclaimable VAT on employee and travel-related expenses, supported by receipt data and audit-ready documentation. The eInvoice solution enables compliance with global e-invoicing mandates and supports formats such as Peppol, XML, JSON, and country-specific systems like Italy’s SDI and Poland’s KSeF. Additionally, Fintua Payments facilitates cross-border B2B transactions, offering features like VAT validation, invoice tracking, and fraud prevention
Leadership
Fintua was founded by Terry Clune, who is also the CEO of CluneTech, the parent company. Clune oversees strategic direction across the CluneTech portfolio.[4]
The CEO of Fintua is Catherine Quirke, who directs global strategy, operations, and business transformation. She has more than two decades of experience in fintech and financial services.
Awards and Recognition
In 2024, Fintua (as Taxback International) was named Overall Fintech Company of the Year for its work in global VAT compliance technology. In 2025, it received two awards at the Irish Accountancy Awards for innovation in technology and client service. The company is also recognized for workplace culture under the CluneTech group.[5]
