Llucs
LLuCS (Laboratoire Luxembourgeois de Contrôle Sanitaire, English: Luxembourg Laboratory for Health Control) is a Luxembourg-based private analytical laboratory founded in 1993 and located at the House of BioHealth in Esch-sur-Alzette.[1] It is accredited by OLAS (Organisme Luxembourgeois d'Accréditation et de Surveillance, the Luxembourg Accreditation and Surveillance Organisation) in accordance with the international standard ISO/IEC 17025:2017, and provides analytical services across four main sectors: food safety, water quality, hygiene, and indoor air quality.[2]
History
Foundation and early years (1993–2018)
The laboratory was established in 1993 under the name HTA (Hygiene in Food Technology), initially focusing on food hygiene analyses.[3] Over the years, it broadened its analytical expertise to cover water, hygiene surfaces, and environmental analyses, establishing itself as a trusted partner for Luxembourg-based businesses and institutions.
In December 2017, the laboratory relocated to the House of BioHealth (HoBH), a modern campus dedicated to health innovation in Esch-sur-Alzette. The move provided significantly expanded laboratory space, improved storage facilities, and the opportunity to develop synergies with other health sector actors on the same site.[3]
Transition to LLuCS (2019)
The year 2019 marked a turning point for the company: the laboratory underwent major changes in both its shareholder structure and its name, transitioning from HTA to LLuCS (Luxembourg Laboratory for Health Control).[3] That same year, LLuCS obtained its ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation from OLAS, a key milestone formally recognising the quality, technical competence, and reliability of its testing processes.[4]
Recent developments
In 2022, LLuCS joined the Paperjam + Delano Business Club, Luxembourg's leading professional business network, with the aim of strengthening its visibility and expanding its network of contacts among Luxembourg's economic decision-makers.[5]
In 2025, Julien Blaise, Business Developer at LLuCS, was among the co-founders of LIAVA (Luxembourg Indoor Air and Ventilation Association), an ASBL (non-profit association) created to bring together Luxembourg professionals specialising in indoor air quality, with a view to contributing to regulatory frameworks and raising public awareness.[6]
Location
LLuCS is headquartered at 27, rue Henri Koch, L-4354 Esch-sur-Alzette, within the House of BioHealth (HoBH) campus. This site brings together actors from the health and biotech ecosystem and provides the infrastructure needed for cutting-edge analytical laboratory work. The laboratory operates Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 17:00.[7]
LLuCS operates a fleet of refrigerated vehicles to ensure samples are transported under optimal temperature-controlled conditions.[8]
Services
LLuCS provides analytical services structured around four areas of expertise.[2]
Food analysis
LLuCS performs analyses covering the entire food chain, from raw production to finished consumer products. Services include microbiological controls, nutritional value analyses, allergen detection, shelf-life studies, and testing for bacterial toxins and endotoxins, including detection of viruses such as coronavirus and norovirus.[9] The laboratory issues annual sanitary compliance certificates to partner establishments based on rigorous annual control plans.[9]
Water analysis
LLuCS provides a comprehensive range of water analysis services covering all water types: drinking water, leisure/swimming pool water, technical water, medical water (dialysis, endoscopy), raw water, bottled water, wastewater, and domestic hot water. A particular speciality is the detection of Legionella bacteria, responsible for Legionnaire's disease.[10] Analyses cover both bacteriological and physico-chemical water quality parameters, in compliance with European directives.[10]
Hygiene analysis
This area covers surface swabs, equipment testing, and dust analyses, notably in the context of food safety management plans (HACCP).
Indoor air quality (IAQ)
LLuCS has established itself as a reference actor in Luxembourg for indoor air quality (IAQ) testing. The laboratory assesses concentrations of chemical compounds, mould, particles, radon, and other pollutants in residential buildings, public-access establishments, offices, schools, and construction sites.[6][11]
LLuCS has developed its own line of air sampling kits under the LLuCS brand, enabling individuals and professionals to take samples on-site and send them directly to the laboratory for analysis.[3]
LLuCS also advises on environmental building certifications (BREEAM, LEED, DGNB, HQE, WELL, LENOZ) with respect to their indoor air quality requirements.[12]
Accreditation
LLuCS holds accreditation from OLAS (Organisme Luxembourgeois d'Accréditation et de Surveillance) under the international standard ISO/IEC 17025:2017. This standard specifies the general requirements for the competence, impartiality and consistent operation of testing and calibration laboratories.[1] The accreditation document is publicly available on the Luxembourg quality portal portail-qualite.public.lu.[4]
The standard requires, among other things:
- Validated analytical methods meeting European norms;
- Continuous metrological monitoring of equipment;
- Use of quality-grade reagents and culture media;
- Regular, targeted staff training to maintain a high level of competence.
Methodology
For each engagement, LLuCS follows a five-step structured sampling process: joint definition of a customised sampling plan with the client; on-site sampling by qualified technicians; secure conditioning and labelling of samples; temperature-controlled transport; and laboratory analysis with result reporting.[9][10]
Clients can pre-register samples and access results online through the secure LabPortal platform.[7]
Partnerships and affiliations
LIAVA
LLuCS is a founding member of LIAVA (Luxembourg Indoor Air and Ventilation Association), a non-profit association officially created in February 2025 to federate IAQ experts, promote best practices, and engage with Luxembourg's regulatory and institutional bodies. The association has initiated exchanges with Neobuild, Luxembourg's construction innovation cluster, with further dialogue planned with government ministries and administrations throughout 2026.[6]
Pando2
LLuCS has partnered with Pando2, a provider of real-time connected air quality monitoring solutions, to offer clients continuous IAQ monitoring through sensor networks complemented by laboratory analyses. This partnership was reported in NEOMAG #54, the magazine of Neobuild.[13]
Octopus Lab
LLuCS has partnered with French company Octopus Lab (Lille), a provider of AI-driven indoor air quality prediction and energy optimisation tools (INDALO® Supervision). This collaboration enables LLuCS to offer clients a complete IAQ management solution combining predictive analytics with laboratory measurement, with a focus on both occupant health and energy efficiency.[14]
Infogreen
LLuCS is a regular contributor and partner of Infogreen, Luxembourg's main media platform dedicated to sustainable development. The laboratory publishes scientific articles on indoor air pollution, mould management, and water quality.[2]
